Discipline

Starting work in the afternoons is new to me. I don't want to waste the mornings so I am trying to discipline myself to get up and get out. There is a contradiction in place; I am not good in the mornings, I find it very hard to get out of bed if I have nothing to do. This has to change. Mornings are amazing, beautiful, ethereal and spiritual, when I do get up and get going, I feel a real sense of satisfaction. Above all the winter months are dark, and it is in the mornings that I can get some Vitamin D. This is important for me as I suffer from depression so it is very easy for me to feel unmotivated and struggle to find a reason to get out of bed.

The beginning of this year has seen a change in my attitude. My new job has made me happier, it is relaxed and I love the people I work with. It is a small business with only 8 members of staff and I'm finding that it is perfect for me. I feel very lucky.

So after settling into my new job, I have now started to live a healthier lifestyle. I love cycling, though I'm not in the enthusiast league, I just cycle for the pleasure of it. Walking is great too, but when I'm walking I feel more lonely. Walking for me is better if I am with other people. I did start to walk with a group last year; we walk once a month. But Mary, our organiser has been ill this January so she was unable to lead us in our walk.

I have also decided to cut out lots of sugar from my diet. I need to lose weight and it will also help me to feel more healthy. It has been 10 days now since I had a bar of chocolate, a biscuit or a piece of cake and I feel much better for it. I have already lost 4lbs which I am ecstatically happy about. I never had. any problems with weight until I reached my 50's. Everything slowed down and I didn't like it. I have become lazy, not getting enough exercise and this is what I really want to change.

I am also determined to be creative. Since I achieved my Degree in 2013, I haven't been able to find any inspiration to be creative. My own fault. Creativity is in the doing and I haven't felt in the least bit motivated. I wanted to do something but I just didn't feel able. So now, this too has to change. I have set up a corner of my little home and last night began my Visual Journal. My plan is to look at local newspapers for any story or article that captures my interest. I'm looking for some local history that I can research. This may lead me to something completely different...who knows, but it is somewhere to start. Nothing will come to something.

For a long time I have the idea to publish a book using my photography and writing some kind of story... factual as opposed to fictional. It will take time but if I don't start, it will never be done. It is something that I feel I'm being called to do. Why, I have no idea. But I guess the why will come with the journey and I will fall upon an idea that will develop.

This morning I cycled to Wiseman's Bridge. It is my local beach and it is changing all the time. Today the rough seas of the last few days have pushed the stones and pebbles into wave like structures. It is interesting to note everyday appears different. Many of our beaches are being covered in large and small rocks and pebbles, the sand is disappearing and the erosion is happening fast.

The sea was scary today. I sat and watched as the tide was turning. I felt a sense of fear, it was so loud and the waves felt as though they were in attack mode. I think the tsunamis that have devastated many a shore over the past years have lodged themselves in my mind and I am always fearful that a huge wave will come and there would be nothing I could do.

Mobile Pictures from this morning at Wiseman's Bridge
They don't really tell the story of a rough, loud sea.....best I could do with my Mobile Camera!

I always look our for faces or shapes in the pebbles and rocks. This one caught my eye, so sweet, sleeping perhaps, smiling..... I call them my pebble friends.

There are Always Days such as This ....

It had been a busy week with work and other things that had to be done. So today I was glad to have slept soundly and woken with a light heart. I read that a friend on FB has a publication da te for her first book "Ghostbird" with the Welsh Women's Press. I am so pleased for her. Then a surprise phone call from a dear friend; that put a smile on my face. This inspired me to go for a cycle to Wisemans Bridge and an hour's walk along the beach, taking in the air, feeling the wind in my face, blowing all those cobwebs away, taking photographs with my DianaF camera of patterns and waves and anything else that grabbed my attention.

These are all simple pleasures, but it is these that make my heart sing and make me feel alive and oh so lucky to have a life that is safe, warm and full of love. Nothing should be taken for granted. I was fortunate to be born in Wales, to have my freedom, to be able to speak and be allowed my own opinions, to be surrounded by nature and the love of family and friends. What more is there to need.

I posted two colour 120mm films to be processed this week. I am going to start a Visual Journal. I feel inspired to start something creative. The Creative Writing Course gave me somthing to push me forward, and now I feel that I am ready to take the next step to creating something. I don't know what. It is a nothing, that will become a something.

There is a Shadow in the Light
But the Light is from the Sun
The Sun holds my heart
No Shadow can dampen this day

Open University Creative Writing Course

I have been searching for something to tax my brain. I looked on the Open University Website and found that there are many courses that I can do which are free. I thought this would be a good way to start. I can experiment with different subjects to see which feeds my curiosity and peeks my interest.

I have decided to begin with the Creative Writing Course. I have always enjoyed writing... so here goes.

ACTIVITY ONE

Write down a quick sentence in response to the advice ‘write what you know’. What does it immediately suggest to you?

What do I know. My first instinct is that I could write about my life, memories, family, people, my love of being creative, music, books I have read, my experience of being a mature student. In fact I think that there are many topics I could write about if I take the time to prepare and think about the things that I actually know about.

ACTIVITY TWO

  • How did the idea for Cowan’s second novel, Common Ground, come about?
  • What parts of Pigwere imagined, what parts researched and what parts autobiographical?
  • How does Cowan use everyday details in his novels?

I have listened to the interview in order to try and answer these questions ...

  1. Cowan says that he found writing his novel Pig very difficult and would do anything other than write. He accumulated lots of material during the writing of Pig as a way of avoiding it. He wrote long letters to his brother who was travelling. He wrote journals every day about his partner's pregnancy and continued for a year after their daughter was born. He also filled a scrap book with newspaper clippings that caught his attention and thought that they would come in useful in the future. One story that captured his interest more than others, was the plight of new age protest group concerned about roads being built on protected sites. He also spent hours looking out of the window on to the city streets of Glasgow where he lived.
  2. Beginning, middle and end were already known. Accumulated factual information about pigs. The pig is a description of his dog, a collie. Researched some aspects e.g boiling swill. Took six years to write. Procrastination important to Cowan.
  3. Advocate of staring out of the window as it can be very productive and gives you ideas to write. Work avoidance, all domestic chores have to be completed before writing otherwise they nag. Everyday details taken from his own life help to give his characters and stories more depth.
ACTIVITY THREE

Close your eyes for a few moments and think of the room or place around you. Think of the details that you would include in any description and make a mental note of them. Open your eyes and, without looking around, write down what you thought of.
Now look at your surroundings and write a paragraph (no more than 150 words) describing them, picking out at least three things that you haven't noticed recently – things you didn't think of when you closed your eyes.
With my eyes closed I thought of .... The TV, the window overlooking the front garden and my car in the drive, the door leading from the front door, the kitchen, the cupboard that holds all my summer clothes, photographs, papers lying on the table that need to be dealt with.

150 words .....the TV sits in the corner, it is small.  I don't want a huge thing that always draws your eye as it is not the most important item in the room to me. I like to have a lot of light in any room, the window allows me to notice the weather, to see people walking with their dogs, others riding horses. The window reminds me that I live in the country and my love of all things nature.
The box that sits on the table in front of me brings back memories of my visit to London to see my daughter. We shopped at Harrods, not being able to afford much, we bought this box filled with sweets. We wanted to eat the sweets, but mainly we wanted something to remind us of our visit and something that was pleasing to look at. it is covered in animals and elf like beings, the colours are mainly blue and green.

Cycling up that hill

I Listen
I set myself a goal
To make it up that hill
16% gradient
A task
I made it
The bell tolls ten o'clock
I sat
The tree gave me sanctuary and a place to lean
I listen
Rain drops fall on leaves
Birds sing in unison
A car, cars pass by
A squirrel runs away
The wind brushes the trees all ways
North, south, east, west
The mist engulfs us all
I move
Listening still but concentration fails
Cycling takes my strength, my focus
My heart is beating fast
I think
I've gone far enough
The hill beckons
How wonderful to feel the speed and wind
I brake
It's too fast
Reaching the bottom of the hill
Another slight incline
I push myself
I can do this
I reach home
I feel a sense of achievement
A coffee now
Ah .....
